Time for a little playing and experimenting with form. I wanted to explore my own version of a simple construction in three parts – a nod to the inspiration of Hans Coper forms.
I found an intriguing potter through YouTube, (John Britt), who talked through reproducing a Hans Coper vessel by constructing a thrown bowl/cup, a disc and a cone shape base. ( link: Reproducing a Hans Coper Vessel )
So many variations to explore, but here are mine as a starting point. Once constructed, I used coloured slip with simple rice paper stencils to mimic foliage in an abstract way.
I have used Bath Potters coloured slips in Raven Black, Dove White, Duck Egg Blue and Hawfinch Orange.
A note about stencils: I have found rice paper makes stencils that are much stronger than newsprint. ( Artway Chinese Sumi Rice Paper Pad – 48 Sheets – 9″ x 12″ – 35gsm, White : Amazon.co.uk ), Rice paper does not tear like newsprint.
The clay is flecked stoneware so there should be some additional texture and speckles to the surface after the final firing.
I think they look quirky. I love them! Drying out now, awaiting a bisque firing…
